Welcome from Dr. Sarah Hall – Wise 5 GP Network
As a Warwick Medical School graduate, and a locally trained GP, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing first-hand the demands of both working and living in our system and contributing to patient care over the last 15 years. I am now delighted to have the opportunity to support our local GP workforce through our Wise 5 GP network.
The network is about creating a space for conversations, allowing you to share experiences and discuss challenges, provide opportunities for supporting your development, both clinically and professionally. This can take the form of mentoring, leadership programmes and educational events, or even the chance to connect with one another.
If you have thoughts on how we can tackle the challenges we face, or ways we can improve our offer, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Opportunities for Wise5 GPs
Are you nearing the end of your career and thinking of retiring? Or looking at alternatives to being a partner? Late-career GPs have a vast amount of experience and there are many opportunities for more flexible employment both in the NHS and for other organisations.
GP Retention Scheme
Want to reduce responsibility, stress and change the pace of work? The GP Retention Scheme is aimed at GPs considering leaving the profession or who have recently retired (within the last 2 years):
- Provides educational and financial support
- A useful way to clearly mark your move from more demanding roles
- Salary may be less but so also is workload and responsibility
- Can work well for both the GP and the employing practice, which receives funding
Return to Practice (RtP)
Did you leave General Practice more than 2 years ago and want to return?
The Return to Practice (RtP) programme provides a safe, supported pathway for qualified GPs to return to NHS General Practice after an absence of more than 2 years.
NHS GP Induction and Refresher Scheme (I&R)
The NHS GP Induction and Refresher (I&R) Scheme is designed to provide a safe, supported, and direct route for qualified GPs to join or return to NHS general practice.
NHS Pensions Scheme Retirement Guide
This short guide outlines the process for NHS Pensions Scheme members who wish to claim NHS Pension retirement benefits.
Career Alternatives
Want to leave general practice, but still interact with patients? These are some of the choices you might consider:
- Extended Roles or Special Interest
- Bespoke Salaried Posts
- Family Planning
- Nursing Homes
- Medical Support Worker
- Hospice
- Urgent Care (A&E/OOH/NHS111)
- Home Visiting Service
- Drug Clinic or Homeless
- Prison or Police Doctor
- DWP Assessor
- Refugees, Asylum Seekers
- Occupational Health
- Voluntary Service Overseas
Have you had enough of clinical medicine? Here are some of the avenues you could pursue:
- Academic Research
- Teacher / Examiner / Mentor
- Appraiser
- Committee (e.g. RCGP, PCN)
- CQC Advisor
- GMC Associate
- Non-Executive Director
- Charity Trustee / Volunteer
Leaving your options open?
Do you need a licence to practise? Some non-clinical posts still require a licence and a minimal clinical commitment. Don’t fall off the performers’ list! Returning could be problematic. You can stay on the performers’ list with minimal clinical input.
Consider retaining your licence and performers’ listing for a year or two – it leaves more doors open.
