Course Overview
- To develop a deeper understanding of providing safe, effective and holistic care, exploring the spiritual, psychological, social and physical domains of the person that is actively dying and those closest to them.
- The importance of Advance Care Planning with patients, their family and carers – using evidence-based and current tools such as the REDMAP Framework, SPICT™ tool and the ReSPECT plan.
- Communication skills in palliative and end of life care. Focusing on undertaking sensitive conversations around prognosis, future treatment and care plans.
- Symptom management in palliative care and end of life care, incorporating pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
- Using case studies, interactive discussions and guidelines, to gain knowledge regarding essential anticipatory end of life medications required for symptom control – allowing a dignified and peaceful death by managing terminal symptoms, such as pain, respiratory secretions, breathlessness, agitation, delirium, overwhelming fear and distress.
- When and where to seek advice regarding specialist medications used in Palliative and End of Life Care. Converting medications from oral to sub cut preparations and considerations in prescribing for patients with renal impairment/failure.
