In our Clinical Masterclass on 17th September 2024 1-2pm, we welcome Professor Tony Avery, Clare Howard and Sundus Jawad to talk about antipsychotic prescribing in people with dementia. It’s 15 years since the Banerjee report and a 2024 study published in the BMJ has again highlighted the risks of these medicines in people with dementia.
Tony is a GP in Nottingham and Professor of Primary Health Care in the School of Medicine at Nottingham University. In March 2022 he was appointed as the inaugural National Clinical Director for Prescribing with NHS England, to help tackle the issue of overprescribing.
Clare Howard is the Clinical Lead for Medicines Optimisation at Wessex Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) where she led the publication of the first national set of polypharmacy prescribing comparators in England. Clare is currently the Clinical Lead for the AHSN Network Polypharmacy Programme. As the first Deputy Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for NHS England, Clare led the Medicines Optimisation programme and delivered the first national medicines optimisation dashboard.
Sundus Jawad is the Lead Medicines Optimisation Care Homes Pharmacist at NHS Frimley ICS. Sundus has over 20 years’ experience working in primary care with GP practices and care homes. She has led on QI projects including a project promoting safer and appropriate use of antipsychotics in people with dementia.
