Course Overview

This 1- or 2-day course offers a blended learning approach of classroom based and hands on practical training in the performance and interpretation of spirometry to those in a healthcare setting. The course can be undertaken as a single day course (either performance or interpretation) or attendance of both days’ dependent upon training and service delivery needs.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of day 1 delegates will:

  • Have a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology associated with the respiratory system
  • Define spirometry indices
  • Be knowledgeable in the types of devices used to make spirometry measurements
  • Understand infection control procedures
  • Be able to calibrate and perform quality control of spirometers
  • Know the pre-test considerations, indications and contra-indications for spirometry
  • Perform accurate height and weight measurements
  • Understand how to obtain accurate quality assured spirometry measurements according to ARTP guidelines
  • Identify results that are not technically acceptable
  • Identify if results meet reproducibility criteria
  • Produce technical report
  • Understand how to perform reversibility

Activity Evaluation

The course will be delivered using a mixture of theoretical teaching, practical sessions in groups, interactive case-studies and open discussion.
