Learning Outcomes:

  • Improve skills in history taking, skin assessment and recognizing skin lesions
  • Gain practical evidence-based knowledge (pharmacological and non pharmacological) on management of common skin conditions in primary care and know when to refer
  • Increase clinical confidence in advising patient and colleagues on recognising and managing skin conditions; and supporting patients  in self-management

1.30pm       Recognising skin changes: skin lesions and skin cancer – when to worry challenge

2.45pm       Screening for skin cancer and sun safety health care education guidance

Day 2 

Fundamental skin treatment and patient support

9.15am           Welcome back and course work review

10.00am         Managing acne in primary care – with ‘hands on’ OTC and topical treatment for mild and moderate acne

10.30hrs        Managing psoriasis in primary care - with ‘hands on’ topical treatment for mild and moderate chronic plaque psoriasis (including body and scalp application demonstrations)                                     

11.00am         COFFEE

11.15am          Managing eczema in primary care – take the topical steroid challenge

12.00hrs        Meet the patient/s find out more how patient self manage chronic skin conditions and what they would like primary care HCPs to know (acne, eczema and psoriasis) with am emphasis of psycho-social aspects and ‘living with’ a skin condition – roundtable session

1.00pm         LUNCH

1.30pm        Practical emollient workshop – ‘test, try and feel’ to understand patient choice

2.15pm         Skin infections – how to recognise/diagnose and manage?

3.00pm        Genital skin conditions  - Update on lichen sclerosis recognition and treatment

3.30pm         When to refer? Case study approach – group work (with TEA)

4.15pm         Practice reviews, competencies and reflective discussion

4.30pm         Evaluation and completion of course
